Buffalograss, Bouteloua dactyloides, is the native short grass of this exact prairie, it will hold a lawn on roughly half the irrigation a Bermuda yard wants, and we install it as sod in Prairie, Legacy, Density and Bowie.
• Kentucky Bluegrass Sod — Kentucky bluegrass sod gives you a genuinely green lawn in March and November, which no warm-season grass in Amarillo will ever do for you. At 3,600 feet in zone 7a it is a legitimate choice rather than a stretch — the same grass that fails in Houston works here, because our winters are cold enough and our nights cool off.
• Tall Fescue Sod — Tall fescue sod is the best shade grass in Amarillo and the right answer for a north-facing yard, a lot with real tree canopy, or anybody who wants green grass in the first week of March. Bermuda and buffalograss both quit below about six hours of direct sun; turf-type tall fescue keeps a stand in four, which is why almost every mature neighbourhood in town has fescue somewhere in it.
• Zoysia Sod — Zoysia sod at this latitude means Meyer, and anyone offering you Emerald or Zeon for an Amarillo yard is selling you a lawn that will not see a third winter. Meyer is the cold-hardy Zoysia japonica selection that made this grass viable in the transition zone at all, and it is effectively the only Zoysia we will put on a Panhandle lot.
• Native Prairie Turf — Native prairie turf is a buffalograss and blue grama planting that treats your yard as part of the short-grass prairie it is physically sitting on, and it is the lowest-water lawn we install. Blue grama, Bouteloua gracilis, and buffalograss are the two dominant native grasses of this exact landscape — they were here before the plough, they are still out there past the last subdivision, and they will hold a lawn on rainfall plus a little help in the worst weeks of summer.
