Amarillo Elite Sod & Turf provides professional sports field & athletic turf in Amarillo, TX for residential and commercial properties across the Texas Panhandle. Sports field turf is judged on two things: whether it drains and whether the surface is true. We build and renovate football and multi-use fields, soccer pitches, baseball and softball outfields and practice areas across the Panhandle, on cold-hardy Bermuda — Tahoma 31, Latitude 36 and NorthBridge — laser-graded so water leaves the field instead of pooling on the hash marks. Cultivar choice up here is a genuine agronomic decision rather than a preference. Tifway 419 is the historic athletic standard nationally and it is a poor bet at 3,600 feet, because a field that loses a percentage of its stand to winterkill has to be patched every spring on somebody's budget. Tahoma 31 was selected for cold hardiness with athletic-grade density and wear tolerance, Latitude 36 has an outstanding traffic record, and both hold up to the beating a goalmouth or a between-the-hashes lane takes across a season. Then there is the calendar problem nobody in South Texas has to solve. Bermuda goes dormant here around late October, which lands squarely inside football season, so a field that is pure Bermuda finishes the year tan and thin exactly when it is on television. The standard answer is overseeding with perennial ryegrass in early autumn, which gives you a green, playable, wearing surface through November, then transitioning it back out in spring so the Bermuda has room to recover. We plan that overseed with the athletic director rather than treating it as an upsell, because the seeding date, the rate and the mowing height all have to fit the play schedule. Grade is where fields are won. We laser-grade to a planar surface with either a centre crown or a directional fall depending on the sport and the site, because a low spot mid-pitch is unplayable for two days after a storm and the turf there dies first. Where a field sits in a bathtub with no outlet — common on this landscape — the honest fix is sand-capping or a drain tile grid, not another layer of sod, and we will say so before you spend on grass twice. Renovation scopes typically include stripping worn zones, killing out invaded common Bermuda and dallisgrass, re-establishing grade, topdressing with washed sand and reinstalling with big-roll sod where access allows. Big roll gives fewer seams and a faster, more even grow-in, and on a field the seams show up in how the ball behaves. We handle goalmouth and infield-arc repairs mid-season, aeration and topdressing to fight compaction on our clay loam, and fertility schedules written around the play calendar with nitrogen stopped early enough that the grass hardens off before the first freeze. For schools and leagues we work around practices and game days, fence the site during install, and give a realistic grow-in window rather than an optimistic one. A June install roots fast. A September install does not, and we will not pretend otherwise.
With 15+ years of experience, our licensed and insured team brings the right materials and equipment to every job — Prairie buffalograss sod, Legacy buffalograss, Bowie buffalograss, Tahoma 31 Bermuda, Latitude 36 Bermuda, NorthBridge Bermuda — and backs the work with a written workmanship warranty. Materials, equipment and how we do sports field & athletic turf
The difference between sports field & athletic turf that lasts and sports field & athletic turf that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with Prairie buffalograss sod, Legacy buffalograss, Bowie buffalograss, Tahoma 31 Bermuda, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.
Every Amarillo job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of sod installation work in the Texas Panhandle means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.
